Jack stows his hammer and shield so he can safely make the leap into the pit to rescue Princess Vasilisa.

As he leaps, he remembers times with her – playing dress-up and tea parties when she was a little girl, her warmth and laughter. He smiles to himself as he falls.

The pressure in his mind disappears like a bubble bursting, and reality crashes in. The image of Vasilisa vanishes, and the grate opens. It is not Vasilisa waiting for him at the bottom of the pit; it is a massive Carrion Crawler. He has been deceived, almost certainly by the mind-bending magic of an Illithid.

There is nothing he can do to stop what is coming; no time to draw his weapon. The venomous tentacles of the Carrion Crawler have already wrapped around him, stiffening his body and limbs. He falls directly into the mouth of the monster, already slicked with digestive slime. The grate slams shut over his head. He is trapped!
