The upper stair leads to a low-ceiling, narrow corridor.
The journey is interminable, and Jack becomes more concerned and more frustrated. There is neither sight nor sign of the Giant, and he suspects he may have chosen wrongly. He pauses, torn in an agony of indecision. The way back may be longer than the way forward; yet, what if the tunnel simply dead-ends? He will have wasted considerable time and the Giant will likely escape.
Still, he would not be called “Perilous Jack” if he were in the habit of turning back. With a grim expression pasted on his face, he continues – forward!
